Substitute Para-Educator

Position Summary:

The WCEL Classroom sub para-educator is an hourly position under the direct supervision of the Classroom Teacher during classes, and the Early Learning Program Manager for reflective supervision and professional development. 

Work schedule will be as needed.   

​

Locations:

Possibility of working at WCEL sites in Bellingham or Ferndale, and in the community offerings in Ferndale, Lynden or Bellingham.   

​

Duties and Responsibilities:​

  • Assist in maintaining indoor and outdoor safe learning environments 

  • Set up necessary supplies and materials for learning activities 

  • Help create necessary items for learning activities as needed 

  • Assist with setup and cleanup classroom program service areas (indoor and outdoor) for all group activities 

  • Welcome and assist children and families at arrival and departure times 

  • Interact directly with children, parents and families in developmentally appropriate learning activities 

  • Welcome and assist student and community volunteers in all programs  

  • Clean and vacuum program areas, wash (and sanitize as necessary)dishes and toys, maintain diaper changing stations and launder and fold bibs/towels as needed.

  • Empty trash & diaper genie

  • In addition, this position may be asked to work on special projects related to Whatcom Center for Early Learning (WCEL) as directed by the Classroom Teacher or Early Learning Program Manager or other WCEL Lead staff these projects

Skills and Abilities:

  • A motivated self-starter and problem solver with energy, flexibility, creativity, a sense of humor, and a willingness to pitch in wherever needed

  • Professional work habits (punctual, responsive, organized, ability to manage multiple activities, attention to detail). 

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff as a foundational team member. 

  • Ability to lift and move play equipment 

  • Reliability and flexibility 

  • Organized with attention to detail and a “can do” positive attitude 

 

Education and Knowledge

  • Minimum of high school degree with further course work in human services and/or child and family related fields preferred 

  • Experience working with typically developing young children and children with special needs preferred

Pay Range: Hourly/Non Exempt DOE
