Did You Know?

  • In 2008, WCEL is currently serving 76 eligible children and families per month throughout Whatcom County in our birth to three program.
  • A developmental delay in a child under three years old may be the result of prematurity, autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, hearing / vision loss or speech delay.
  • Most families who have a child with a developmental delay have no other family members with developmental delays.
  • 90% of families at WCEL had good pre-natal care and no risk factors for the pregnancy.
  • An occupational therapist helps infants and toddlers with physical delays learn to reach for objects, sit, walk and draw with a crayon at preschool.
  • To be eligible for WCEL’s core services, children are evaluated by early childhood specialists who find out how they are growing and learning by using standardized tests in a way that’s fun for babies.
