How did you hear about WCEL?
My two-year-old son participated in the "Sensational Toddlers" program. This program provides an opportunity for special needs children to enjoy playgroups with non-special needs children at the WCEL site, which is a win-win for all of the kids.
Why did you decide to join WCEL's board?
My wife encouraged me to join the board after raving about the "Sensational Toddlers" program, and learning more about WCEL's mission. Also, WCEL provides a much needed service to Whatcom County, and serving on the board provides me with an opportunity to help give back to the community.
What was your awareness of children who had special needs when you were growing up?
Both of my parents are educators who currently work with special needs children (in Snohomish County). When I was growing up in Bellingham, my parents both worked at WATCI, which was a predecessor to WCEL. I remember as a child in the mid-1970s visiting WATCI many times and visiting with the children enrolled in that program.
Will you tell us some ways you've been able to make a contribution to WCEL?
While my time has been limited, I've been fortunate to be able to enroll the financial assistance of my employer (ConocoPhillips) to help put on the May 8, 2004, Barbed Wire Cutters fundraiser, and even became involved in developing WCEL's new mission statement.
Anything else you'd like to add?
Just that I'm honored to be given the opportunity to help out with an organization that serves such a need in both children's and parents' lives!
(note: Unfortunately, Mike's job was transferred so he and his family moved out-of-state in 2005)
