Children’s Music Helps Early Childhood Education
Whatcom Center for Early Learning is releasing a CD of children’s music to help fund their programs.
“Proceeds from this CD will directly support our early intervention programs, providing stimulation, experience and education to young children around the county,” said WCEL’s director Katie Humes. WCEL promotes the optimum development of all Whatcom County infants and toddlers and their families, with a special focus on young children with developmental delays.
The CD, We’re So Glad You Came to Play, features performances of children’s songs by local musicians Richard Scholtz and Janet Peterson. The CD package was designed by Rod Burton of Roderick C. Burton – Art & Design. Scholtz sings and plays autoharp, dulcimer and nose whistle on the CD. Peterson, a member of the folk quartet Motherlode, sings and plays guitar. “I’ve continued to be impressed over the years with what an important community resource WCEL is,” said Scholtz. The CD was recorded and mastered at Live Music Recording by Scholtz. The songs on We’re So Glad You Came to Play are some of those taught to the children who participate in WCEL services.
The Center for Early Learning offers educational opportunities for children from birth to three years of age. Regular classes are offered at a large converted house at 2001 H Street in Bellingham. They also provide educational therapy at home for children with developmental delays, some of whom are medically fragile and would fall farther behind if they had no home-based therapy. “The time we spend with these children really helps them get on the right track for mental, physical, social and emotional development,” said Humes. Educational activities include parent-child playgroups, speech and language therapy, physical therapy, parent training and support sessions.
The CD may be purchased at the Whatcom Center for Early Learning, 2001 H Street, Bellingham, Village Books in Fairhaven and at other locations. WCEL may be reached at 671-3660.
