Our daughter, Beth, was born on March 29, 2002. At two months of age, she was diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder. This news was shock to us as the pregnancy was healthy and there was no family history of illness. Beth was enrolled at Whatcom Center for Early Learning soon after the test results came back and has now been attending for two years.
Whatcom Center first allowed us to see that while Beth’s diagnosis was rare, the health and developmental problems were not. We honestly don’t know what we would have done without the speech, occupational and special education services we received at the Center.
Beth is now walking, talking a little, and using sign language. A year from now, when Beth is three and graduates from Whatcom Center, we will also have help in making the transition from this birth-to-three program to special education preschool.
Thank you Whatcom Center and thank you to the Barbed Wire Cutters. Beth’s dad was a member for almost five years (and from the time of Beth’s birth!). We are grateful to have them playing [for the May 8, 2004 fundraiser].
